Dr. Hassan Tetteh was born in Brooklyn, New York, to the parents of West African immigrants. When his parents left Africa in search of a better life, their strength carried over into the courage Dr. Tetteh employs every day. He approaches his work and life as a gift, encourages patients to “never sacrifice the gift” and challenges himself every day to give back all that he has received.
PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL WORK
Dr. Tetteh is a board-certified surgeon specializing in thoracic surgery, critical care, heart and lung transplantation, research and education. Dr. Tetteh is a member of the Washington Regional Transplant Consortium, and serves as a cardiothoracic staff surgeon at both Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He also has academic appointments as an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, and Adjunct Professor of Surgery at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
After receiving his M.D. from the State University of New York (S.U.N.Y.) Downstate Medical School in 1998, Dr. Tetteh completed his general surgery residency at Downstate and Kings County Hospitals in Brooklyn, New York. Following his residency, he then served as the Director for Surgical Services aboard the USS Carl Vinson (CVN70). In 2007, Dr. Tetteh received the Alley Sheridan Award from the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE), and that same year was selected as a fellow for the Society for Black Academic Surgeons Leadership Institute. In 2008, he received a National Institute of Health (NIH) / National Medical Association (NMA) travel grant for young clinical investigators and completed his thoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Tetteh went on to complete an advanced cardiac surgery fellowship at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
PUBLIC POLICY AND MANAGEMENT
Along with his extensive work in the medical field, Dr. Tetteh is a recognized authority on healthcare and public policy. Dr. Tetteh received his Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. In 2009, he moderated the seminar: “Achieving Total Health: Eliminating Disparities through Policy,” during the Harvard Kennedy School’s Black Policy Conference. He also has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Medical Services Management from the Johns Hopkins University Carey School of Business. Dr. Tetteh was a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow from 2012-2013, assigned to the U.S. Congress, Congressional Budget Office (CBO.) He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). He has published numerous articles on issues of health care, health care reform, and health-policy management and administration.
PHILANTHROPY AND SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP
A humanitarian at heart, Dr. Tetteh serves as a board member for three philanthropic and social impact organizations. These non-profit organizations include: Champions for Kids, dedicated to positively transforming the lives of millions of children; Mentoring in Medicine, inspiring the next generation of health and science professionals; and the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health, advancing equitable healthcare delivery systems and reducing health disparity. Through his involvement with the above organizations and others, Dr. Tetteh has delivered keynotes and led educational forums, assisted with fundraising, and mentored students. Hassan is committed to using his gifts to help others and impact the world for good. He believes wholeheartedly that, “To whom much is given, much is expected.”
