According to a 2017 report released by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the national rate of opioid-related inpatient stays (hospitalizations) increased 64.1% and the national rate of opioid-related emergency department (ED) visits increased 99.4% from 2005 to 2014. Surprisingly there is no standard set of practices for hospital-based interventions.

This session will review the impact of the opioid epidemic on hospital services, present an emerging set of best practices that hospitals can and should implement, and discuss strategies to increase wide-scale adoption.

Learning Objectives:

1) Describe the impact that the opioid epidemic has on hospital services.

2) Identify successful practices implemented that have reduced the rate of drug diversion.

3) Produce strategies for wide-spread adoption and implementation of these services in your IDN.
